Scuba Dive Spots in Maratua, Essential Points for Thrilling Underwater Adventures

Emerges as an enchanting sanctuary within Indonesia's sprawling archipelago, Maratua Island presenting a spectrum of diving escapades suitable for scuba divers of every skill level. From beginner-friendly reefs to advanced diver challenges, Maratua's underwater landscape is diverse and full of life. Delve into this guide to discover the must-visit dive spots that promise thrilling underwater adventures.

The Channel

One of the most challenging dive sites in Maratua, The Channel is known for its strong currents. Divers often use a hook to stay in place to watch a spectacular show of marine life, including grey reef sharks, giant groupers, and schools of barracuda and jackfish. This site is best visited when the tide is rising, which offers the most dynamic viewing of feeding activities.

Cabbage Coral

Just a short distance from the resort, Cabbage Coral offers an easier dive experience with mild currents. Here, divers can explore a vast area of undamaged cabbage corals spread over an area as large as a football field. The depth varies, and as you move further out, you might encounter turtles and occasionally, mantas and eagle rays.

East Wall

Known as the Eagle-Ray Point, East Wall is particularly famous for its impressive array of sea fans and black corals. Starting from a 45-degree slope and dropping sharply to depths of 70 meters, this site offers high chances of spotting eagle rays among the densely populated coral walls.

Lighthouse

Near the Twin Pillars, the Lighthouse features a gradually sloping drop-off to about 40 meters. The currents here are generally mild, making it suitable for less experienced divers. The site is populated with a variety of fish including schools of batfish and occasionally, leopard sharks.

House Reef

Ideal for beginners and night dives, the House Reef offers calm conditions with slow currents, especially during high tide. It’s an excellent spot for observing macro life like leaf fish, lionfish, and the elusive ghost-pipe fish.
